Beach, BBQ, Baptisms at Bahia Honda

Off to Bahia Honda in a few minutes for one of my favorite gatherings, a little event we call “Beach, BBQ, Baptisms at Bahia Honda”. Being in a church in the Florida Keys give us the privilege of being able to baptize in an amazing ocean setting on a beautiful beach. I think it allows for a powerful memory of being baptized.

We also have some great fellowship and worship while we are there, along with an always over the top barbecue. It looks like we should have really good weather today. We have been baptizing this way for years and we try and get out there at least four times a year and one of the things that changes is the size of the waves. Sometimes, the waves are big enough that we almost don’t have to really dunk anyone, we just wait for a big enough wave to crash over the top of us.

Before we go into the water, I always give a brief teaching on what baptism is all about and then I tell people the mechanics of what we are going to do. have them kneel down, hold their nose and then we take them over backwards into the water. At this point I tell them how long we hold them underwater will be determined by how much sin they have done. It’s a joke, of course, but if I don’t mention it in the talk, someone will bring it up anyway.

Here are a couple of pictures from a recent baptism. If you want to see more, just click on the links to my Flickr account.
