Better Than a Sharp Stick

I got a phone call today from a friend of mine in Sebastian, Florida. His name is Dick Gilmore and he used to come to our church here in Big Pine Key. At the time He lived in Key Largo and for two years he and his wife Judy drove almost two hours each way to be here on Sunday. This always made me feel pressured to do a good job, like if people were driving two hours to come to church we should be raising the dead or something.

Anyway, after two years of this I had an idea and I took Dick and Judy with me to a conference on church planting. After we got there and sat through the sessions he said to me, “Hey, why did you bring me to this conference”? I said I thought they should plant a church in Key Largo, which confirmed what the Lord had already been impressing on them, and so we did. They actually planted their church in a marina which also had a little restaurant and bar. They were outside mostly, but in bad weather they would have to move into the bar area for church. During the years the church met there, a lot of people ended up coming to the church from the bar. I love that story.

After five or six years, Dick and Judy felt like it was time to move and so they headed up to Sebastian. Dick is one of the worship leaders at a church called the Tabernacle. Enough background. Let’s get to the phone call. Dick was leading worship at his church Sunday and they ended their worship time with a song called “Revelation 19″ which I wrote years ago. It is a simple worship song with a lot of hallelujahs and amens in the chorus. He said that everyone was really into it and at the end of the song the presence of the Lord was so strong that no one could speak for about five minutes. Isn’t that cool!

Now I know that it isn’t about me or the fact that I wrote the song they were singing when they experienced God so powerfully. We have done the song here lots of times and never had anything like that happen. But I have to tell you, that in the middle of a kind of elephant eating crazy day, that phone call was WAY better than a sharp stick in the eye. It was very encouraging to hear about the Jesus Moment they had and that Dick thought it was important enough to take some time out of his busy schedule (Dick is now the Mayor of Sebastian) to call me and let me know. Maybe we should all think about how we could take a few moments and encourage someone in our lives today!

Pastor Steve! This made me very very happy to hear. I really do love reading your updates, and I’m very very VERY happy that you have a facebook now.

It’s definitely a great way to start my morning, and I appreciate the Jesus Moment to refocus my day before wheeling and dealing.

    Thanks!

I LOVE your song!!!! I always pictured us singing
that song up in heaven (it would be funny to sing that song IN heaven which is about what’s going on in heaven), along with the Vineyard
version of Holy, Holy, Holy. I wish I could purchase a copy of your Revelation 19 song, because I think it is really, really powerful, and
puts your mind in a place far, far away from here.
