Bible Reading 1 Samuel 13 – 15
Today’s reading (check out the right hand side of the Jesus Moment site for the links) is 1 Samuel 13 through 15. As Saul moves into his kingship, there is a pride and arrogance that develops that will be his down fall. His attitude changes as one who initially hides himself away from the people (hiding with the baggage 1 Samuel 10:22) to a man who o longer listens to Samuel, and chooses not to obey the Lord. These actions lead to this kingship being taken from Him by God. While Samuel seems to be repentant in Chapter 15, there is a verse that brings demonstrates his real motive:
1 Samuel 15:30 (New International Version)
30 Saul replied, “I have sinned. But please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”
It seems that Samuel is not repentant that he disobeyed, it seems he is more concerned about how it looks to the people. I will be thinking about this verse today and about what real repentance looks like. Real repentance is not just owning up to what you got caught for, it is coming clean with God and then doing the next right thing.
