Bible Reading 1 Samuel 22 – 24

Today’s reading is 1 Samuel 22 through 24. As I was reading I was struck by the description of the group that David initially gathered around him.

1 Samuel 22:2 (New International Version)
2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.

Sounds like a fun group. The distressed, the discontented and the in debt. I think it is interesting how God seems to work through broken people. As I remember Jesus initial group was not all that impressive either.

It is also interesting to see how much reverence David gives to Saul. Saul is trying to kill David, but David extends Saul mercy at every opportunity. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why David is a person after God’s own heart. I am going to be thinking about this verse today:

1 Samuel 24:17 (New International Version)
17 “You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.

I think that most of the time when someone treats us badly, we want to treat them the same way. That is not how God wants us to live.
