Bible Reading 1 Samuel 7 – 9
ByToday’s Bible reading (by clicking on the link on the right side of A Jesus Moment you can read through the Bible in One Year) is 1 Samuel 7 through 9. These chapters introduce us to Saul, and to the people of Israel asking for a King. Saul seems to start out OK, but things will change for the worse in the chapters ahead. The whole concept of Israel asking for a King is a big deal. Rather than being content as the chosen people of God, they want to be like every other nation and have a King. Even when Samuel warns them about the hardships a King will cause them, that is still what they want, and God allows them to have a King. The verses that I am going to spend some time thinking about today are:
1 Samuel 8:19-20 (New International Version)
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
How often do we exchange what really matters, for what seems safe? How often do I choose the safe way instead of choosing God’s way because it requires faith and trust and risk?
