Bible Reading Joshua 5 – 8

By Steve

Today’s Bible reading, found on the right side of the Jesus Moment site, is Joshua 5 through 8. These chapters are really violent. From circumcision to all out war there is a lot of blood and death recorded. For many people, it is hard to reconcile a God of love with these orders to completely destroy the inhabitants of the land. It is a lot to think about.

Sometimes it is easy to miss some pretty descriptive things in the Bible by not stopping to figure out what the name means. For example, the Israelites are circumcised at Gibeath Haaraloth, which means “hill of foreskins”. I am pretty sure we don’t teach that in children’s church. We do however, teach about the walls of Jericho coming down with a shout. After reading the story of Achan, I am sure glad that Jesus has made a way for us to be forgiven of our sin!.

Today I will be thinking about Joshua 5:15

Joshua 5:15 (New International Version)

15 The commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
