Bible Reading Judges 5 – 8
ByToday’s Bible reading is Judges 5 through 8. (If you would like to read through the Bible in a year, just follow the plan on the right side of the Jesus Moment site). Chapter five records an interesting song. As I was reading I couldn’t help but start trying to melody to the words. Of course, when I got to verses 24 through 27 it seemed like I need to be singing something with a lot more violent undertone. These verses record what Jael did to Sisera in the last chapter. Check it out:
Joshua 5:24-27 (NIV)
24 “Most blessed of women be Jael,
the wife of Heber the Kenite,
most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk;
in a bowl fit for nobles she brought him curdled milk.
26 Her hand reached for the tent peg,
her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.
27 At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay.
At her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell-dead.
What kind of music do you put behind those lyrics? The next three chapters are about Gideon. It is a fascinating story. Gideon is called a mighty warrior, even though he is hiding in a wine press. Then, he puts together a big army and the Lord only lets him keep the three hundred who lap water like dogs. Then, Gideon asks for two different fleece events from the Lord so he can be sure. It also amazes at how the sin cycle plays out in the book Judges. As soon as Gideon dies, the Israelites go back to worshiping false gods. Today I am going to think about Judges 6:24:
Judges 6:24 (New International Version)
24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
I am thankful that God makes available to us His peace, which passes understanding.
