Developing a Disciple’s Heart – Part 5

• February 26, 2012 • Comments (0)

Last week we talked about how important the way we view God is, and that He sees us as a treasure and a pearl. Knowing how He sees us, we are going to dig deeper today into the way that we see Him, or perceive Him. We need to know that He is faithful, He is good, always good, and only good. We will be looking at Hebrews 10:23, but lets start with our scripture reading today.

1 Corinthians Chapter 15

The crucifixion and resurrection were actual events that occurred in the real world. They are not mythical or mystical in character. These events took place according to the scriptures. The crucifixion and resurrection have both a historical and scriptural element. These events were prominently included in all of the apostolic teaching of the gospel. The gospel is just not the gospel if the resurrection is not a central part of it. That is why Paul reminds the Corinthians that “this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.”

We are still working on our perspective and focus about who we are in Christ and what that means for us. We can enter the literal presence of the God, where we are seen in Christ as clean and purified. Even though we know our brokenness, even though the enemy wants to use guilt and shame to try and steal the life away from us that we can have as disciples, we can enjoy the new and living way made available to us by our great priest and we can live the full life He has come to give us and we can see things with a throne room perspective.

1 Corinthians Chapter 14

• February 17, 2012 • Comments (0)

From the result of sin, husbands try to dominate their wives and wives try to dominate their husbands. Neither is God’s ideal. Because of sin, men often view women as inferior and for their own use, not as companions or as helpers as God intended. Therefore throughout history things like polygamy, slavery and subjugation of women were practiced.

By the time Jesus entered the scene, women were being treated very poorly. They were bought and sold, traded and discarded. The position of women had been reduced to insignificance. But that was not how God intended it, nor is it God’s fault. He never condoned this behavior but instead offered a radically different paradigm.

In the way that we have all worked from our earthy origins…we have excelled at sin, selfishness, contempt – both self and other centered, we have approached life from the old dead way of thinking of our earthy origins, now in the same way, with as much enthusiasm and effort that you have put in the earthy ways, embrace His ways, heavenly ways, throne room ways, Kingdom of God ways. Life, full life, heavenly life, eternal life is available to you to experience now. Push into His presence every day.

I can enter into the glorious throne room of God, the Most Holy Place, because I am a new creation in Christ, and I am pressing on to the life that He has called me for. I am living by trying to do the next right thing. Messing up, running back to my heavenly father, asking for and receiving forgiveness and getting a do over so I can live in His new living way.

Are you aware of your own rudeness? Do you catch yourself being rude? Do you ever say “I don’t mean to be rude but ……” as though somehow this is an excuse for being rude. If someone says I don’t mean to be rude but.. to you, you need to kindly go (cover ears and go lalalalalalal). You are helping them.

Perhaps, the reality of the presence of God and His holiness causes us to be overwhelmed by the reality of our brokenness. It is like a mirror that puts our sin and brokenness right in our face, and yet if we can just understand that our confidence in being in His presence is in Christ, then we can begin the process of being healed of the mess. Our guilt and shame stop becoming such easy fodder for the evil one to try keep us from the life we have been called to as Jesus disciples.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, you can’t view spirituality from your pre-Christian perspective. God is at work in each one of through His Spirit. But what the Spirit is doing in each of is different. He is the one who gives us different spiritual gifts which are to be used to help others. How He chooses to work in each one of us is completely up to Him. You see, as we are together in Christ, we are His body.

Developing a Disciple’s Heart – Introduction

• January 22, 2012 • Comments (2)

Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was. He could have come up with a very complex detailed answer, but He didn’t. His answer was simple and perfect. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. This was Jesus answer to being asked the big question, “what is the most important thing in life?” Love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

If that is the most important thing then it just makes sense for us to make it a priority. Loving God and loving others is what comes out of a disciple’s heart. So, developing a disciple’s heart is where our journey must take us.
