Easter is All About You (You are not an Egghead!)
Today we are going to talk about how Easter is all about you. I want to start with a deeply theological statement
1.) We all have some ooops in our lives
In this instance, ooops is just a word that means sin.
Romans 3:23 (NIV)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
So what? In America, our culture overwhelmingly believes that there is more to life than just the years that we live here in the physical. Something like 90% of Americans believe in heaven or an afterlife of some type.
Interestingly, if you ask most of those people how you get to heaven, they will tell you that you just have to be a good person. That if you do more good than bad, it somehow all balances out on the cosmic scale and God says come on in. There are some problems with that idea however. Here is one of them.
2.) Heaven is a perfect place
Heaven is not just a good/great place. Heaven is a perfect place and you have to be perfect to get in
Matthew 5:48 (NIV)
48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
A simple definition of perfect = no ooops
Back at the first point we all agreed that we all have some ooops, none of us is perfect. We have a problem. How can we get in to heaven? We are not perfect? We might have even done more good than bad, but even a little ooops makes us not perfect? Fortunately for us
3.) Jesus was perfect
Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.
How does that help us? It is Jesus perfection as our substitute that we need.
4.) Easter – the cross and the resurrection
Perfect Jesus went to the cross, gave his sinless as a sacrifice to cover all our sin, defeated death and rose again.
Isaiah 53:4-5 (NIV)
4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
When we put our trust in what God has dome for us through Jesus at the cross, God credits perfection to our spiritual bank account
Hebrews 10:14 (NIV)
14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
He covers our ooops. God now sees us In Christ with no ooops.
So how do we put our trust in Him?
Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)
9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
And that is how Easter is all about you.
