Here’s Your Sign
I often find that God has interesting ways of getting my attention. Here is how a Jesus moment often happens in my life. I was on my way for Saturday Night services and when I pulled into the parking lot I saw a van off in the corner with some big hand written signs on the side. I had this immediate feeling of uneasiness come over me and I drove a little closer to read what the signs said. They were handwritten signs on poster board that had been taped to the van and they had things written on them about Jesus. Now, this may not seem like a problem to you, but it has been my experience that when people have big hand written posters on their vehicles, they are usually a problem. Compound that memory with the fact that I had already had a long and emotional day and you have me getting quickly judgmental. I actually though to myself on the way into the building that if they were a problem, I was too tired to deal with them and I would just ask them to leave. This is not a good mind set for the Pastor of a church.
I walked in and the worship team was getting ready to practice and I told them that I was having a hard day and I was feeling very judgmental and then I told them why. Then we started practicing and I saw the guys walk in from the van. Here is where the Lord got me. I had met these guys the week before (not in their van) and I had liked both of them. Once I saw it was them, the van made sense (not what I would do, but probably effective for the type of street ministry they are involved in. I was glad that I hadn’t acted out in the frustration of my hasty judgment but had actually brought it into the light with the worship team. I also felt like it was another reminder from the Lord to not make those hasty judgments, and to not be so quick to think that previous bad encounters with situations will mean that future encounters that are similar will always turn out bad. You really can’t judge a book by its cover, or a van by its sign.
