The Blessing of the Pets
On Saturday we are having our first “Blessing of the Pets” services at the Vineyard Community Church. I am looking forward to it, but I have no idea about what is going to happen. I am sure some good stories will come out of the experience. I already have one good story. Since I started announcing the event a few weeks ago, I have had two people ask me if we could pet exorcisms. I think that is really funny. My response to both of those who asked was, “Let’s see if the blessing works first, and then we can go from there”. I understand how they feel, and there are certainly times when I wonder what in the world has gotten into our little “Rat Terrier”. For her really rowdy times, we have taken to calling her a “Rat Terrorist”.
While I was preparing for the “Pet Blessing” message I found a great verse:
Job 12:7-10 (King James Version)
7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: 8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. 9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? 10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
I think verse 10 can help people who wonder if our pet’s have souls. I believe that since our pets love, they have souls and verse 10 backs it up. When I think about, we are calling this service the Blessing of the Pets, but the reality is, those of us who have pets are the ones that are blessed.
